Identifying the Verbal Tics in your College Essay

Identifying the Verbal Tics in your College Essay Identifying the Verbal Tics in your College Essay Identifying the Verbal Tics in your College Essay Most people are unaware of their own verbal tics. While we know to look out for fillers like “uh,” “um,” “like,” even “you know,” sometimes less generic stand-ins seep into our vocabulary and stick. These words can become so ingrained in our speech patterns, they become  like verbal fingerprints. Remember when you  mocked your sister mercilessly for using the word frankly (Did she just step off the set of Gone With the Wind? or something?)  only to realize to your horror that you had started to use the word too? Slate recently published an  article about these  â€œfingerprint words,” how they come about and how they spread. Sadly, using someone else’s fingerprint word can make you seem like a follower (even if you’re totally not). Perhaps even worse is when other people start using your fingerprint word and don’t realize where it came from. (Chris Traegar is literally beside himself that literally everyone has been using the word literally.) But there is something to be said for having an unusual word in your vocabulary that identifies the speech as yours. You’re unique, and your speech is too! How do fingerprint words factor into your college essay? Most of the time words that are recycled in language so often they can be classified as verbal tics dont add anything to the meaning or impact of your thoughts, both in speech and in writing. Be cognizant of this when you read over your essay. If you can lose those fingerprint words in favor of simplicity and directness, do it. You may not know you have a fingerprint word, but you’ll realize it quickly when you proofread. So don’t skip that step! Contact us for help proofreading for fingerprint words. Writing a Persuasive Essay Topic on Racism

<h1>Writing a Persuasive Essay Topic on Racism</h1><p>The key to composing a convincing exposition theme on bigotry is to have a reasonable and compact clarification for your focuses. In case you're on a cutoff time, you will most likely be unable to give a persuading contention, however you ought to in any event have the option to introduce your reasons such that others can comprehend. Utilize these tips for composing an article that persuades.</p><p></p><p>Let's beginning with a basic model. A teacher relegated three expositions on prejudice. Two of the papers depended on normal generalizations, and these individuals were asked to compose a convincing exposition about for what valid reason they weren't right. The other two papers managed increasingly explicit issues, yet had a significant number of similar thoughts in common.</p><p></p><p>The second one was composed by an individual who contended that most supremacis t generalizing is a direct result of normal generalizations - how individuals of color dress, their discourse designs, etc. The last one was composed by an individual who felt emphatically that the proof demonstrated that a great many people are preferential against individuals of color and that these cliché thoughts are only that - generalizations. So as to be powerful in an exposition, you can say what you feel, yet don't lie.</p><p></p><p>Both of these contentions are substantial, yet numerous individuals will contend that generalizations are false. Numerous individuals accept that it is difficult cutting straight to the chase about what somebody's race resembles. The thing that matters is in the level of assurance in the generalizations. You can utilize rationale and thinking to state that generalizations aren't accurate or aren't substantial, yet you should likewise recall that even the most deliberately contemplated contention can be defamed on the off chance that you state something outrightly false.</p><p></p><p>The first contention you can use in this circumstance is to locate some simple counters. Contentions are not all that effectively invalidated, and numerous individuals are happy to fully trust them. It is anything but difficult to track down comments on the side of your position in the event that you set aside effort to consider what you are stating. Likewise, the most widely recognized contentions about prejudice frequently require something very specific.</p><p></p><p>An case of powerful paper themes on bigotry that utilizes the primary alternative would be something like 'Suppose I am a white individual and you are an individual of color, and I inquire as to whether you have ever executed an individual. You are going to state no.' Because you have responded to this inquiry in the positive, you've disposed of the need to contend with a counterargument.</p><p> </p><p>Using this thought, you can say something like 'Suppose I am an individual of color and you are a white individual, and we concur that we would prefer not to execute one another. What might we need to concur upon? We could concur that we won't get into rough fights, and afterward we could concur that we both love this country.'</p><p></p><p>Using the basic models above, you can see that there are a wide range of approaches to think of enticing article subjects on prejudice. Your educator ought to have the option to tell on the off chance that you've utilized these strategies when you're composing the article don't as well, stress in the event that you don't have the foggiest idea about the specific details.</p>

The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI)

The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) Theories Personality Psychology Print The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory By Kendra Cherry facebook twitter Kendra Cherry, MS, is an author, educational consultant, and speaker focused on helping students learn about psychology. Learn about our editorial policy Kendra Cherry Updated on June 25, 2019 Jonathan Downey/Getty Images More in Theories Personality Psychology Myers-Briggs Type Indicator Behavioral Psychology Cognitive Psychology Developmental Psychology Social Psychology Biological Psychology Psychosocial Psychology In This Article Table of Contents Expand History Use Revisions Administration 10 Clinical Scales Validity Scales View All Back To Top The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) is the most widely used and researched clinical assessment tool used by mental health professionals to help diagnose mental health disorders. Originally developed in the late 1930s, the test has been revised and updated several times to improve accuracy and validity. The MMPI-2 consists of 567 true-false questions and takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes to complete, while the MMPI-2-RF has 338 true-false questions, taking 35 to 50 minutes to finish. History The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI) was developed in 1937 by clinical psychologist Starke R. Hathaway and neuropsychiatrist J. Charnley McKinley at the University of Minnesota. Today, its the most frequently used clinical testing instrument and is one of the most researched psychological tests in existence. While the MMPI is not a perfect test, it remains a valuable tool in the diagnosis and treatment of mental illness. Use The MMPI is most commonly used by mental health professionals to assess and diagnose mental illness, but it has been utilized in other fields outside of clinical psychology. The MMPI-2 is often used in legal cases, including criminal defense and custody disputes. The test has also been used as a screening instrument for certain professions, especially high-risk jobs, although using it in this manner has been controversial. Its also used to evaluate the effectiveness of treatment programs, including substance abuse programs. Revisions In the years after the test was first published, clinicians and researchers began to question the accuracy of the MMPI. Critics pointed out that the original sample group was inadequate. Others argued that the results indicated possible test bias, while others felt the test itself contained sexist and racist questions. In response to these issues, the MMPI underwent a revision in the late 1980s. Many questions were removed or reworded while a number of new questions were added. Additionally, new validity scales were incorporated in the revised test. The revised edition of the test was released in 1989 as the MMPI-2. The test received revision again in 2001 and updates in 2003 and 2009, and its still in use today as the most frequently used clinical assessment test. The most recent edition of the test, published in 2008, is known as the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2-Restructured Form (MMPI-2-RF), an alternative to the MMPI-2. However, the MMPI-2 is still used more often than the MMPI-2-RF. There is also an MMPI, published in 1992, thats geared toward adolescents aged 14 to 18 years old called the MMPI-A. With 478 questions, it takes about an hour to complete. In 2016, the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-Adolescent-Restructured Form (MMPI-A-RF) was published. Like the MMPI-2-RF, its shorter, with just 241 questions that take 25 to 45 minutes to answer. Administration The MMPI-2 contains 567 test items and takes approximately 60 to 90 minutes to complete. The MMPI-2-RF contains 338 questions and takes around 35 to 50 minutes to finish. Because the MMPI is copyrighted by the University of Minnesota, clinicians must pay to administer and utilize the test. The MMPI should be administered, scored, and interpreted by a professional, preferably a clinical psychologist or psychiatrist, who has received special training in MMPI use. This test should be used with other assessment tools as well. A diagnosis should never be made solely on the results of the MMPI. The MMPI can be administered individually or in groups and computerized versions are available as well. Both the MMPI-2 and the MMPI-2-RF are designed for individuals age 18 years and older. The test can be scored by hand or by a computer, but the results should always be interpreted by a qualified mental health professional that has had extensive training in MMPI interpretation. 10 Clinical Scales The MMPI-2 and MMPI-A have 10 clinical scales that are used to indicate different psychological conditions, though the MMPI-2-RF and the MMPI-A-RF use different scales. Despite the names given to each scale, they are not a pure measure since many conditions have overlapping symptoms. Because of this, most psychologists simply refer to each scale by number. The clinical scales on the MMPI-2 and the MMPI-A include: Scale 1â€"Hypochondriasis:  This scale was designed to assess a neurotic concern over bodily functioning. The items on this scale concern physical symptoms and well-being. It was originally developed to identify patients displaying the symptoms of hypochondria.Scale 2â€"Depression:  This scale was originally designed to identify depression, characterized by poor morale, lack of hope in the future, and general dissatisfaction with ones own life situation. Very high scores may indicate depression, while moderate scores tend to reveal a general dissatisfaction with one’s life.Scale 3â€"Hysteria:  The third scale was originally designed to identify those who display hysteria or physical complaints in stressful situations. Those who are well-educated and of a high social class tend to score higher on this scale. Women also tend to score higher than men on this scale.Scale 4â€"Psychopathic deviate:  Originally developed to identify psychopathic patients, this scale measures social deviat ion, lack of acceptance of authority, and amorality (a disregard for morality). This scale can be thought of as a measure of disobedience and antisocial behavior. High scorers tend to be more rebellious, while low scorers are more accepting of authority. Despite the name of this scale, high scorers are usually diagnosed with a  personality disorder  rather than a  psychotic disorder.Scale 5â€"Masculinity-femininity:  This scale was designed by the original authors to identify homosexual tendencies, but was found to be largely ineffective. Its intended to show how much or how little a person identifies with his or her genders interests.Scale 6â€"Paranoia:  This scale was originally developed to identify patients with  paranoid symptoms  such as suspiciousness, feelings of persecution, grandiose self-concepts, excessive sensitivity, and rigid attitudes. Those who score high on this scale tend to have paranoid or psychotic symptoms.Scale 7â€"Psychasthenia:  This diagnostic label is no longer used today and the symptoms described on this scale are more reflective of anxiety, depression, and  obsessive-compulsive disorder. This scale was originally used to measure excessive doubts, compulsions, obsessions, and unreasonable fears.Scale 8â€"Schizophrenia:  This scale was originally developed to identify schizophrenic patients and reflects a wide variety of areas including bizarre thought processes and peculiar perceptions, social alienation, poor familial relationships, difficulties in concentration and impulse control, lack of deep interests, disturbing questions of self-worth and self-identity, and sexual difficulties. It may show potential substance abuse, emotional or social alienation, eccentricities, and a limited interest in other people.Scale 9â€"Hypomania:  This scale was developed to identify characteristics of hypomania such as elevated mood, hallucinations, delusions of grandeur, accelerated speech and motor activity, irritability,  flight of ideas, and b rief periods of depression.Scale 0â€"Social  introversion:  This scale was developed later than the other nine scales. Its designed to assess a person’s shyness and tendency to withdraw from social contacts and responsibilities. Validity Scales All of the MMPI tests use validity scales of varying sorts to help assess the accuracy of each individuals answers. Since these tests can be used for circumstances like employment screenings and custody hearings, test takers may not be completely honest in their answers. Validity scales can show how accurate the test is, as well as to what degree answers may have been distorted. The MMPI-2 uses these validity scales: The L Scale:  Also referred to as the lie scale, this uncommon virtues validity scale was developed to detect attempts by patients to present themselves in a favorable light. People who score high on this scale deliberately try to present themselves in the most positive way possible, rejecting shortcomings or unfavorable characteristics. The F Scale:  This scale is used to detect attempts at overreporting. Essentially, people who score high on this scale are trying to appear worse than they really are, they may be in severe psychological distress, or they may be just randomly answering questions without paying attention to what the questions say. This scale asks questions designed to determine if test takers are contradicting themselves in their responses. The K Scale:  Sometimes referred to as the “defensiveness scale,” this scale is a more effective and less obvious way of detecting attempts to present oneself in the best possible way by underreporting. People may underreport bec ause theyre worried about being judged or they may be minimizing their problems or denying that they have any problems at all.The ? Scale:  Also known as the “cannot say” scale, this validity scale assesses the number of items left unanswered. The MMPI manual recommends that any test with 30 or more unanswered questions be declared invalid.TRIN Scale:  The True Response Inconsistency Scale (TRIN) was developed to detect people who use fixed responding, a method of taking the test without regard to the question, such as marking ten questions true, the next ten as false, and so on. Fixed responding could be used due to not being able to read or comprehend the test material well or being defiant about having to take the test. This section consists of 20 paired questions that are the opposite of each other.VRIN Scale:  The Variable Response Inconsistency Scale (VRIN) is another method developed to detect inconsistent, random responses. Like fixed responding, this can be intentional or it can be due to not understanding the material or not being able to read it.The Fb Scale:  This scale is designed to show changes in how a person responded in the first half of the test versus how he or she responded in the second half by using questions that most normal respondents didnt support. High scores on this scale sometimes indicate that the respondent stopped paying attention and began answering questions randomly. It can also be due to over or underreporting, fixed responding, becoming tired, or being under severe stress. The Fp Scale: This scale helps detect intentional overreporting in people who have a mental health disorder of some sort or who were using random or fixed responding. The FBS Scale: The symptom validity scale is used for people who are taking the test because theyre claiming that they had a personal injury or disability. This scale can help establish the credibility of the test taker. The S Scale: The superlative self-presentation scale was developed in 1995 to look for additional underreporting. It also has sub-scales that assess the test takers belief in human goodness, serenity, contentment with life, patience/denial of irritability, and denial of moral flaws.

Sexual Orientation Based Hate Crimes - 890 Words

In 2013, nearly 200 reported cases of sexual orientation-based hate crimes were reported in Canada; of those crimes, 66% involved violence (Watson, 2015). Scott Jones, a young homosexual man was the victim of one of these attacks. The brutal attack rendered him paralyzed. This presents the role of nursing, as well as the roles of the other health care professionals, is very collaborative and team oriented, as they were never addressed individually. This presentation of their roles was somewhat consistent with my pre-existent idea of what roles they play. An example would be in terms of emotional availability, by acknowledging Jones’ concerns. (Jones, 2015). However, I had never considered the role of nursing, or the other professions as being so largely team oriented or being in direct contact on a daily basis. An atmosphere of mutual respect and civility is necessary to provide safe and effective care (Burgess. C Curry. M, 2014 page 1-2). Drawing On What You Have Learned About City Road Essay Thesis Example For Students

Drawing On What You Have Learned About City Road Essay Thesis Social order is the manner in which a society is organized and rules and standards required to maintain that organization. (MD, 2009) In this essay, my IM is to describe some of the ways in which order is made and repaired. The street that have chosen to use is Suicide high street in Kent. Will draw along three main points through this essay. These points are as follows: 1. Visible and invisible ordering 2. Traffic management 3. People This first point is Ordering, As with any other street, there are many examples of ordering, both visible and invisible. One example of visible ordering on the high street is traffic lights and pedestrian crossings This street furniture is put into place to keep order to drivers and pedestrians. Quite often in Suicide high street, this order is disrupted by unruly drivers who speed up to rush past the amber light before it turns red, and impatient pedestrians who run across the road Without waiting until it is safe. It is instances like this, that a figure in authority i. E. A police officer will intervene to put order back into society. An example of invisible ordering on Suicide high street is maintenance. Maintenance is a very important job and should be done on a regular basis. Problems with the electricity can cause disruptions to society. For grapple: In 2009, Most of Begley, (and other owns) was plunged into darkness as all power suddenly failed. This was due to vandals setting fire to the mains and damaging four main electricity circuit. (R,Fish, 2009) Workers on Suicide high street suffered because of this, as all shops had to close due to this. The EDP company had workers on the case to get the disruption fixed, To keep things calm and stop any additional trouble forming to any poutiness, the police raised the numbers of patrols in the affected areas until the power was restored, In comparison, City Road also has both visible and invisible ordering, as seen on the making social live DVD, June Rogers (the lollipop lady) is forced to tell a driver to reverse off of the crossing, and she simply restores order. (M_Compton, 2009) Also, City Road has CATV cameras placed at different areas of the road, as does Suicide high street. M. Compton, 2009) My second point on how order is made and repaired, is on traffic management. On the high street, there is a set of traffic lights and to the right, there is another set Of traffic lights where cars come out from. Your view is Obstructed and as a result you can not see any on coming traffic from that direction. Some drivers regularly speed past the amber lights and because of the obstruc tion, they would to see the danger approaching and this would cause a near miss and in some cases a collision. This has been repaired by Begley council, who found that the solution was to remove both sets of lights and replace them with a round-a-bout. (Begley borough, 2012) In contrast to City Road, this solution to have the round- a-bout was the most effective to restore order to society, where as, we see that on the making social lives on City Road DVD a shop owner expressed his view that the solution that the council have made about moving the bus stop is not the best idea and would cause further complications to the road. (M. Compton, This final point is about the different types of people who use the street and how it changes through the day. During the day, the narrow street is filled with vehicles and a range of people, i. E mothers, the elderly and workers of the street Even though it is very busy it feels quite safe. As the day goes on the types of people change, mainly filled with teenagers, waiting at the bus stops to go home. As night comes, the scene changes drastically, the streets filled with drunken groups and people out to dinner With friends. The feel Of the street somehow seems more crowded and unsafe. .ubeee4ca1bddc33dce133d12559b2a5d2 , .ubeee4ca1bddc33dce133d12559b2a5d2 .postImageUrl , .ubeee4ca1bddc33dce133d12559b2a5d2 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ubeee4ca1bddc33dce133d12559b2a5d2 , .ubeee4ca1bddc33dce133d12559b2a5d2:hover , .ubeee4ca1bddc33dce133d12559b2a5d2:visited , .ubeee4ca1bddc33dce133d12559b2a5d2:active { border:0!important; } .ubeee4ca1bddc33dce133d12559b2a5d2 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ubeee4ca1bddc33dce133d12559b2a5d2 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ubeee4ca1bddc33dce133d12559b2a5d2:active , .ubeee4ca1bddc33dce133d12559b2a5d2:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ubeee4ca1bddc33dce133d12559b2a5d2 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ubeee4ca1bddc33dce133d12559b2a5d2 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ubeee4ca1bddc33dce133d12559b2a5d2 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ubeee4ca1bddc33dce133d12559b2a5d2 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ubeee4ca1bddc33dce133d12559b2a5d2:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ubeee4ca1bddc33dce133d12559b2a5d2 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ubeee4ca1bddc33dce133d12559b2a5d2 .ubeee4ca1bddc33dce133d12559b2a5d2-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ubeee4ca1bddc33dce133d12559b2a5d2:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Effect of Schemas on Drawing a Clock EssayThis is similar to City Road as both have very efferent scenes from day to night. As expressed by the men in the municipal club on the making social lives DVD, the street at night feels very unsafe and one of the men even says that his girl will rather get a taxi the 300 meters to their home than walk. (M. Compton, 2009) But City Road does have its differences as the road itself it much longer, It has more pubs/clubs on it. Because of this, police numbers would have to be higher than on Suicide high street to make sure any disorder is sorted more efficiently.
